Spinelli Park at the BUGA Mannheim

BUGA Mannheim had set itself the goal of becoming the most sustainable Federal Garden Show. Spinelli Park, originally a former military area, was transformed into a spacious and diverse green space as part of BUGA23. This transformation was carried out with sustainability, ecological diversity and social inclusion in mind. The four key themes of the BUGA (climate, environment, energy and food security) are most clearly reflected in the experimental field in Spinelli Park: jagged edges of the paving and ice floes cast in concrete mark the climate area.

Spinelli: Military site until 2014, BUGA site in 2023

On the occasion of the Federal Garden Show 2023, the former Spinelli Barracks were transformed into extensive green spaces that are part of the 'Green Corridor North-East', which supplies Mannheim with cool air as a fresh air corridor. During the BUGA, Spinelli is divided into eight areas that focus on the environment, climate and sustainability, among other things.

There, GDLA was allowed to design the framework for the show gardens of the region's gardening and landscaping companies in the "climate band" area. On an area of around 6,500 m², examples were given of how landscape architecture can deal with the challenges of climate change in future planning.

Polygonal concrete slabs symbolize ice floes

Jagged concrete block slabs of the GDM.SCENIC collection type pick up on the theme of climate in the experimental field. The polygonal concrete slabs in two surface finishes extend from the show gardens to the edge of the climate band. Individual slabs are lost on the water surface, symbolizing ice floes floating in the sea and drawing attention to the effects of climate change.

After the end of the garden show, the park was handed over to the city of Mannheim to serve as a permanent recreational and leisure area for the citizens.

Tomorrow's urban planning is about thinking about urban space in an ecologically sustainable way - in other words, developing it in a climate-resilient and healthy way. At the same time, the requirements for well-designed, barrier-free spaces with a high quality of stay and plenty of room for human interaction are increasing.
