The Rhineland-Palatinate state capital of Mainz is laying special paving stones to combat high nitrogen oxide levels. This involves using photocatalysis to reduce toxic air pollutants in central streets such as Große Langgasse. The Mainz residents are using the high-quality GDM.SCADA stone design paving in the proAir version. The facing concrete of these paving stones is mixed with titanium dioxide, which converts harmful nitrogen oxides into nitrate when exposed to UV radiation, i.e. sunlight. Nitrate itself is harmless, it is washed away with rainwater and does not cause any environmental pollution in these quantities.
